What is Sorbitan Monostearate

图片
Ⅰ. Introduction of sorbitan monostearate Sorbitan monostearate is a brown waxy substance that is insoluble in water, can disperse in hot water and soluble in hot oil, fatty acids and various organic solvents. It is resistant to acid and alkaline, and has good stability against metal ions. Sorbitan monostearate is compatible with nonionic, most anionic and cationic surfactants. It has numerous properties including emulsifying, dispersing, thickening and lubricating and more. Sorbitan monostearate  is an ester mixture of sorbitan and stearic acid. It is prepared by dehydratation of sorbitol and esterisificaiton with stearic acid under alkaline catalysis. It can also be prepared by direct estificaiton of sorbitol and stearic acid at 180 - 280°C.   Ⅱ. Functions of sorbitan monostearate: 1. As a W/O food emulsifier, sorbitan monostearate can be used alone or in combination with polysorbate 60, polysorbate 80 and polysorbate 65. 2. According to the Chinese regulations, sorbitan mono...

The Functions of Polysorbate 60

图片
Polysorbate 60 is a synthetic ingredient that can be used in cosmetics and skin care to improve the texture of the formulation. It can be used as a surfactant, emulsifier and solubilizer. Polysorbate 60 is produced by ethoxylation of sorbitan. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that can be found naturally in certain fruits. Ethoxylation is the chemical reaction of adding ethylene oxide to sorbitol. Sorbitan reacts with 60 units of ethylene oxide, thus the number 60 in its name. The last step is to react with fatty acids derived from vegetable oils, such as lauric acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid or oleic acid.  In addition to its functions in cosmetics, polysorbate 60  can also be used to prepare a variety of products in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Polysorbate 60 in cosmetics mainly functions to enhance the emulsification and lubricity, and is suitable for long-term storage. Polysorbate containing 60 oxyethylene units is a hydrophilic nonionic surfactant and is wi...

Understanding Nonionic Surfactants

图片
According to the charge of the hydrophilic head, surfactants are classified as anionic, nonionic, cationic or amphoteric. Nonionic surfactants are neutral, and their hydrophilic ends are not charged. 1. Uses of nonionic surfactants The sorbitan ester  and polysorbate products under the Huana brand belong to nonionic surfactants . Non-ionic surfactants are very good at emulsifying oil and are more effective than anionic surfactants in removing organic dirt. The sorbitan ester and polysorbate are often used together to create a dual-action, multi-purpose cleaner that not only floats and suspends particulate dirt, but also emulsifies oily dirt. Certain non-ionic surfactants can be non-foaming or low-foaming, which makes them a good choice for low-foaming detergent ingredients. 2. The unique property of nonionic surfactants Nonionic surfactants have a unique property called cloud point. The cloud point is the temperature at which the non-ionic surfactant begins to separate ...

Polysorbate 60 Used in the Food Industry

图片
Polysorbate 60, lemon-colored to orange oily liquid or semi-gel, with slight special odor and slightly bitter taste. It is a non-ionic surfactant and has been widely used in the fields of food, daily chemicals, medicine, and mechanical processing. There are two synthetic methods, one-step method and two-step method. The products produced by the traditional one-step base catalysis method contain many by-products such as diesters and triesters, which are dark in color and unstable in quality, and can only be used for petroleum and washing and textile industries. The two-step method is divided into two types: first etherification and then esterification and first esterification and then etherification. The product obtained by first etherification and then esterification has a dark color, high content of diester and triester, and poor quality performance while the product obtained by the post-etherification production process has darker color, higher hydroxyl value, poor fluidity and...

Do You Know About the Advantages of Low Foaming Nonionic Surfactants

图片
  1. Low foaming nonionic surfactants Detergent is a very broad term; it includes various kinds of industrial detergents and commercial detergents. Commercial detergent is the most common type of detergent for consumers. Besides the strength of detergency and cleaning efficiency, the property of low foaming has become an important aspect in developing both commercial and industrial detergents. 2. The advantages of low foaming nonionic surfactants In industrial scale cleaning, having too much foam means more water and electricity are needed to remove the foam and thus increase in cost. Furthermore, operation speed, efficiency and service life of certain facilities and equipment might decline due to long period of time soaking in foam and detergents. A balance between detergency and foam can be achieved by adapting low foaming nonionic surfactant in detergent formulation. Low foaming nonionic surfactants have great surface activity, detergency, wettability, dispersancy and lubri...

The Functions of Nonionic Surfactants in Productions -2

图片
  1. Nonionic surfactants in leather production The need of nonionic surfactant is limited in leather production, however nonionic surfactant is very important in enhancing the quality of leather. Leather production includes pre-treatment, tanning, fatliquoring, dyeing, finishing and many other processes. Among these processes, nonionic surfactants are mainly used in tanning and fatliquoring. In practice, nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene ethers are often used to give the leather a better hand feeling, so that the final leather produced appears smoother and has a more vivid color. 2. Nonionic surfactants in coal production In coal production, nonionic surfactants  determine the quality of coal. Due to ubiquitous problems of high ash content and high humidity in coal, nonionic surfactant becomes an indispensable chemical in the production of coal. Flotation is often used in coal production, where air is injected into coal slurry, then surfactant is added to the slurry to form...
