What are Nonionic Surfactants?

图片
Surfactants are composed of a hydrophilic group and a hydrophobic group. Unlike ionic surfactants, the hydrophilic groups of nonionic surfactants are not charged. Instead, their water-solubility is due to their covalently bonded oxygen-containing hydrophilic groups. The lack of charge contributes to a milder property, which makes nonionic surfactants suitable for use in personal care, home and agrochemical products.   Properties of Nonionic surfactants:   1. Decrease surface/ interfacial tensions   2. High stability, less sensitive to electrolytes   3. Less sensitive to hard water, e.g., water containing Mg2+, Ca2+   4. Less sensitive to acidity or alkalinity     5. Nonionic surfactant   is compatible with other types of surfactants   6. Soluble in water or organic solvents   7. Most surfactants are in liquid or thick liquid form, ease of use   Common types of nonionic surfactants:   · Ethoxylated fatty acids   · Al...

The Properties and Functions of Polysorbate 80

图片
Polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate also known as Polysorbate 80, is a type of nonionic surfactant. It functions as an emulsifier, a dispersant, a wetting agent, a solubilizer, and a stabilizer in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, pigments, textiles, agrichemicals etc.  Like other polysorbates, polysorbate 80 can be used alone or used in combination with sorbitan ester   60, 65 or 80.   Polysorbate 80 can be used as solubilizer in medicines. Research has shown that when polysorbate 80 reaches a certain critical concentration, its hydrophobic parts attract to each other, which forms into micelles, where hydrophobic parts face inwards and hydrophilic parts face outwards. Micelles combine with substances that needs to be solubilized, thereby enhance the solubilities of the substances such as active pharmaceutical ingredients. To optimize solubilization, researchers have suggested to first combine polysorbate 80 with lipid-soluble pharmaceutical ingredients, then a...

The Properties and Functions of Polysorbate 60

图片
Polysorbate 60 is an oily thick liquid or a semi-solid with yellowish or amber color. It has a distinctive odor and slight bitter taste. Polysorbate 60 is a nonionic surfactant that is commonly used in food, personal care, pharmaceutical, industrial and more. There are two ways to synthesize polysorbate 60. The most common way is to go through base catalysis, where diesters, triglyceride and other by-products are produced in the reaction, resulting in dark color and unstable quality product. This type of polysorbate can only be used for petroleum, cleanser, textile and other industrial productions. Another way of synthesis is carried out by etherification and esterification; when etherification is performed prior to esterification, the product appears to be dark colored with high diesters and triglyceride contents and low stability. Whereas when esterification is performed before etherification, the product has lighter color, higher monoester yield and higher stability.   Po...

The Function of Polysorbate 80

图片
Polysorbate 80 is a synthetic non-ionic emulsifier, widely used in cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical preparations. Its industrial manufacturing method is: under the condition of alkali catalysis, the addition reaction of ethylene oxide with sorbitol fatty acid esters and sorbitol fatty acid esters is carried out, in which every 1mol of sorbitol or corresponding sorbitol anhydride is added to 20mol of epoxy ethane.   1. Types of polysorbates   The most common types of polysorbates are polysorbate 20, 40, 60, 65 and 80. In addition, there are also polysorbate 21 , 61, 81 and 85. Polysorbate at room temperature is paste-like or in a form of sticky oily liquid with a color between light beige and light yellow. Polysorbate has good thermal stability. Because the long polyoxyethylene chain, the hydrophilic group is the dominant component of the entire emulsifier molecule.   2. Brief introduction of polysorbate 80     Polysorbate 80 is hydrophilic which have la...

Polysorbate 20 and Polysorbate 80 Used in Pharmaceuticals

图片
  1. What are polysorbate 20 and polysorbate 80?     Polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (aka. polysorbate 20) and polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate (aka. Polysorbate 80) derived from sorbitan monolaurate and sorbitan monooleate through fatty acids esterification.   They are lipophilic nonionic surfactants that can be used in pharmaceutical excipients formulations to prevent protein denaturation, aggregation, surface absorption and flocculation during melting process.   2. The characteristics of polysorbates   As a protein stabilizer, polysorbates can be degraded through oxidation and hydrolysis pathways, where the hydrolysis pathway is chemically induced or enzymatically catalyzed. Polysorbate 20 uses   and polysorbate 80 uses   are normally protein stabilizers in most commercial therapeutic protein formulations. This is because of the following characteristics of polysorbates:   (1) Biocompatibility;   (2) Low toxicity; ...

Polysobates as a Food Additive

图片
With the rising living standards, consumers' requirements for food are increasingly higher. Not only they expect for nutritious and safe food, but they also demand for unique and innovative tastey food. Food additive expands the variations of food products. The applications of food additives have been expanding due to the indepth research and development as well as restrict regulations. Thousands of food additives are in use in our daily food productions to expand the shelf-lives and enhance the staiblities of products. Surfactant is one of the most common group of food additives.   Surfactants are amphiphilic, they comsist of both hydrophilic and lipophilic groups; which allows them to diffuse in between the interface of water and oil/ liquid and air/ liquid and solid. This interaction lowers the surface tension between two immisible liquids/ liquid and air/ liquid and solid. Surfactants have various functions, include, emulsification, thickening agent, dispersant and wette...

Polysorbates and Sorbitan Esters

图片
  1. Introduction of sorbitan esters   Dehydrated sorbitol fatty acid ester also known as sorbitan ester is a class of popular non-ionic surfactant, which has a history of nearly 50 years. Sorbitan ester has diverse applications in foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, petroleum and other fields.   Since sorbitan esters  are relatively hydrophobic, they are rarely used alone in formulations. They are usually used in combinations with other surfactants that have better water solubilities, which can exert better emulsification ability. Hydrophilic polysorbates are commonly paired with sorbitan esters. By combining different portions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic emulsifiers, different hydrophilic-lipophilic balances (HLB) can be achieved to expand the applications of the emulsifier mixtures.   Sorbitan esters are the non-ethoxylated precursor of polysorbates. Under the process of polyoxyethylene, transesterification occurs, where the ester groups on sorbitans rearra...
